LANSING, MI — The Lansing School District announced that Jessica Benavides will assume the role of Interim Superintendent effective February 1, 2026, following formal action by the Lansing School District Board of Education during its December meetings.

With her appointment, Benavides becomes the second Hispanic superintendent currently serving in the state of Michigan, joining Ana Alemán-Putman, Superintendent of South Haven Public Schools. The milestone underscores the growing presence of Latino leadership in Michigan’s public education system.

The Board of Education voted on December 11 to enter contract negotiations with a candidate for the interim role and finalized the appointment on December 18 with approval of Benavides’ contract. She will continue serving as First Deputy Superintendent until officially stepping into the superintendent role.

A 23-year veteran of Lansing schools, Benavides brings deep institutional knowledge and a long-standing personal connection to the district. She began her career as a teacher in 1998 and later served as principal of Sheridan Road STEM Magnet School. Her leadership journey has included roles as Executive Director of School Improvement and Innovation, Assistant Superintendent, and most recently, First Deputy Superintendent.

Her appointment also reflects Lansing’s history of Hispanic leadership at the district’s highest level. From 2012 to 2019, Yvonne Caamal Canul served as superintendent, leaving a lasting legacy focused on academic progress, community engagement, and equity-driven reform. Benavides now builds upon that foundation as the district moves forward.

Throughout her career, Benavides has been recognized for her focus on instructional improvement, organizational stability, and student-centered decision-making. She has worked closely with principals and educators to ensure schools are supported and aligned with district goals, while maintaining a strong emphasis on equity, safety, and collaboration.

Board of Education President Robin Moore praised Benavides’ steady leadership and deep commitment to the community, noting that her appointment provides continuity during a period of transition. The Board indicated it will announce next steps in the search for a permanent superintendent at a future date.

Current Superintendent Ben Shuldiner will conclude his service on January 31, 2026, and transition to a similar leadership role with Seattle Public Schools. District leaders credited Shuldiner with building positive momentum and strengthening the district during his tenure.

As Benavides prepares to lead Lansing schools, her appointment represents both continuity and progress—highlighting the district’s commitment to inclusive leadership and the growing influence of Hispanic educators shaping the future of public education in Michigan.
