GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Founded 25 years ago, the Committee to Honor César E. Chávez, Grand Rapids has become a cornerstone of social justice advocacy and community empowerment in West Michigan. Established by the Hon. Lupe Ramos-Montigny, Levi Rickert, Ed Sosa, the late Marshall Chávez, and Francisco “Pancho” Vega, the Committee was built on the enduring principles championed by César E. Chávez—justice, dignity, and respect for all workers and communities.

Over the past quarter century, the Committee’s mission has been sustained through the dedication of volunteers, educators, sponsors, and community partners who share a commitment to equity and opportunity. Through higher education initiatives, community awards, and meaningful mentorships, the organization continues to uplift future generations while honoring the legacy of one of the nation’s most influential civil rights leaders.

As part of its ongoing work, the Committee announced the date and details for its 2026 Social Justice Activities, inviting the community to come together in solidarity and reflection.

The annual observance will take place on Thursday, March 12, 2026, along César E. Chávez Avenue in Grand Rapids, with staging at the Hispanic Center of Western Michigan. The day’s schedule includes:

• 11:00 a.m. — Social Justice March
• 11:45 a.m. — Community Gathering
• 1:00 p.m. — Unity Luncheon

“These activities are about more than remembrance,” said Hon. Lupe Ramos-Montigny, chairwoman of the Committee. “They are about renewing our commitment to justice, education, and collective action—values that César Chávez lived every day.”

The Committee encourages families, students, labor advocates, and community members from across the region to participate and help continue a tradition rooted in hope, service, and empowerment.
