LANSING, MI — January 8, 2026 — The Lansing School District Board of Education convened its annual organizational meeting on January 8, selecting officers who will guide the Board through a year defined by extraordinary responsibility and pivotal leadership decisions.
Veteran board member Guillermo Z. López was elected President, bringing decades of community leadership and public service to the role. He will be joined by Vice President Dr. Caitlin Cavanagh, an educator and scholar with expertise in developmental psychology and equity-focused policy. The Board also elected Dan Nowiski as Treasurer and Cirea Strode as Secretary, completing a leadership team grounded in governance, student advocacy, and community engagement.
This year’s officers step into their roles at a critical moment for the district. One of their first major responsibilities will be identifying and appointing a new board member to fill a vacancy created when Dr. Deyanira Nevarez Martinez resigned from the Board after being elected to the Lansing City Council.
In addition, the Board’s leadership will guide the process to appoint a new superintendent, a decision expected to have long-term implications for district stability, academic direction, and community trust. Together, these responsibilities underscore the significance of the newly elected officers and the pivotal role they will play in shaping the future of Lansing’s public schools.
