EAST LANSING, MI (Jan. 16, 2026) — The No. 11 Illinois Fighting Illini established control early and carried it through the remainder of the night, posting a 31–12 Big Ten victory over the Michigan State Spartans on Friday at Jenison Field House.

Illinois opened the dual by stacking early wins and quickly creating separation. A pin at 141 pounds followed by a technical fall at 149 allowed the Illini to dictate the tempo and keep pressure on Michigan State throughout the middle of the lineup.

Michigan State’s most notable moment came at 157 pounds, where Darius Marines delivered a momentum-lifting pin for the Spartans. Marines, a Latino redshirt freshman from Lansing and a graduate of Detroit Catholic Central, provided a bright spot on an otherwise difficult night for MSU.

Illinois answered decisively, responding with technical falls at 165 and 174 pounds before adding a major decision at 184 to extend the lead beyond reach. The Illini’s ability to generate bonus points proved to be the difference, preventing Michigan State from mounting a sustained comeback.

The Spartans closed the dual with decision victories at 197 pounds and heavyweight, but the early damage proved too much to overcome. While Michigan State’s roster includes a few Latino wrestlers, Marines was the only one to compete in this dual, making his performance stand out for the home side.

With the win, Illinois secured its first Big Ten victory of the season, while Michigan State continues conference play gaining valuable experience against one of the nation’s toughest wrestling conferences.
