DETROIT, MI (6-9-26) — Military Appreciation Day at Comerica Park gave Detroit Tigers fans plenty to celebrate Tuesday night. After enduring a sweep the last time the Minnesota Twins visited Detroit, the Tigers responded with a four-home run performance and a dominant bullpen effort to defeat Minnesota 10-4 in the opener of a three-game series before 22,641 fans.
Minnesota wasted little time getting on the scoreboard as Byron Buxton (#25) launched a leadoff home run in the top of the first inning. The Tigers answered immediately when Dillon Dingler (#13) crushed a solo shot to left field, tying the game at 1-1.
Detroit grabbed its first lead of the night in the second inning when Riley Greene (#31) connected on a solo homer to left field, his seventh of the season.
The Twins tied the contest in the third when Josh Bell (#56) hit a solo home run to left-center field. Detroit reclaimed the advantage moments later when Greene (#31) lifted a sacrifice fly to left field, scoring Kevin McGonigle (#7) for a 3-2 lead.
Minnesota again battled back in the fifth inning. Brooks Lee (#22) and Kody Clemens (#2) delivered back-to-back solo home runs, giving the Twins a brief 4-3 advantage.
The lead lasted only minutes.
In the bottom half of the inning, Dingler (#13) doubled and came around to score when Kerry Carpenter (#30) launched a two-run homer to right field, putting Detroit back in front 5-4.
The Tigers broke the game open in the sixth. Zach McKinstry (#39) tripled and Gleyber Torres (#25) reached base ahead of Dingler (#13), who delivered the biggest swing of the evening. The Detroit catcher blasted his second home run of the game, a three-run shot to left field that extended the Tigers’ lead to 8-4.
Dingler (#13) finished the night 4-for-5 with two home runs, four RBIs, and three runs scored, leading an offense that scored 10 runs despite collecting just 10 hits.
Detroit added two insurance runs in the seventh inning when Torres (#25) lined a two-run single to left field, scoring Greene (#31) and Spencer Torkelson (#20) for the game’s final runs.
While the Twins relied on home runs from Buxton (#25), Bell (#56), Lee (#22), and Clemens (#2), Detroit’s pitching staff prevented Minnesota from building any sustained rallies.
Troy Melton (#52) earned the victory to improve to 3-0 on the season. The right-hander allowed four runs on eight hits while striking out five over five innings.
Once Melton’s night was complete, the Tigers bullpen took over. Brenan Hanifee (#75), Drew Anderson (#38), Tyler Holton (#87), Kyle Finnegan (#67), and Enmanuel De Jesus (#37) combined for four scoreless innings, allowing just two hits while striking out six Twins hitters.
Greene (#31) drove in two runs, Carpenter (#30) added two RBIs, and Torres (#25) contributed a pair of RBIs as Detroit improved its standing in the American League Central race.
The victory not only gave Detroit a strong start to the series but also provided a measure of revenge against a Twins club that swept the Tigers during its previous visit to Comerica Park. Detroit will look to secure the series victory Wednesday night in Game 2 of the three-game set.
