DETROIT, MI (6-17-26) — Hundreds of thousands of spectators are expected to gather along the Detroit River on Monday, June 22, as the annual Ford Fireworks return to downtown Detroit, bringing one of the nation’s premier fireworks celebrations back to the city skyline.

City of Detroit officials have announced extensive security measures, transportation adjustments, street closures, and designated viewing areas to help ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for residents and visitors attending the event.

The primary public viewing locations will be Hart Plaza, Spirit Plaza, Erma Henderson Park, and Belle Isle. Hart Plaza, Spirit Plaza, and Erma Henderson Park will open at 2 p.m. and remain accessible until capacity is reached. Admission to all three sites is free.

Erma Henderson Park, a new designated viewing area for 2026, can accommodate approximately 1,500 spectators. Officials remind attendees that all viewing sites are weapon-free zones and that everyone entering will be subject to security screening. Coolers, backpacks, tents, alcohol, drones, pets, personal fireworks, and cooking equipment will not be permitted.

Belle Isle will remain closed until 2 p.m. on June 22 before reopening for fireworks spectators. The island will accommodate up to 3,000 vehicles before reaching capacity. Once full, pedestrian and bicycle access will continue. Drivers entering Belle Isle must have a Michigan Recreation Passport displayed on their vehicle, while pedestrians and bicyclists may enter free of charge.

Detroit Police and city officials are encouraging attendees to arrive early and plan transportation in advance due to anticipated traffic congestion and several planned road closures. Beginning around 6 p.m., portions of downtown Detroit will be restricted to vehicle traffic, including sections of Woodward Avenue and streets surrounding the riverfront viewing areas.

Several popular riverfront parks and public spaces will be closed June 22 to support public safety operations, including the Riverwalk, Robert C. Valade Park, Milliken State Park, Gabriel Richard Park, Riverside Park, and numerous other waterfront locations.

For visitors driving downtown, city-owned parking facilities will be available at the Ford Underground Garage and the Eastern Market Garage. Parking meters throughout Detroit will not be enforced after 5 p.m., though standard parking restrictions will remain in effect and illegally parked vehicles may be ticketed or towed.

Public transportation will play a major role in moving spectators throughout the evening. The Detroit Department of Transportation (DDOT) will operate modified bus routes beginning at 5 p.m., while the Detroit People Mover will run from 6:30 a.m. until midnight with free rides available. The Q-Line will operate a shortened route beginning at 6 p.m.

The City of Detroit also announced enhanced safety measures for families attending the fireworks. A curfew for minors ages 17 and under will be enforced from 8 p.m. on June 22 until 6 a.m. on June 23 within a designated downtown area. Minors inside the curfew zone must be accompanied by a parent, legal guardian, or responsible adult age 21 or older.

Officials are encouraging families to identify meeting locations in advance in case children become separated from their group. Designated lost-child locations will include Huntington Place, the Detroit Police Department’s Third and Fourth Precincts, and the Coleman A. Young Recreation Center.

The Ford Fireworks have become one of Detroit’s signature summer traditions, drawing spectators from throughout Michigan, Ohio, and Ontario. With the Detroit River serving as a backdrop, the event annually showcases a spectacular display of pyrotechnics that celebrates the city’s spirit, resilience, and community pride.

For the latest updates on transportation, closures, and event information, visitors are encouraged to monitor City of Detroit communications and plan ahead before heading downtown.
