DETROIT, MI (6-18-26) —Mexico became the first nation to secure a place in the knockout rounds of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after defeating South Korea 1-0 Thursday night before a capacity crowd at Guadalajara Stadium.
The decisive moment came when a costly mistake by the South Korean goalkeeper allowed Mexico to capitalize and score the lone goal of the match. The victory gave El Tri six points through two Group A matches and guaranteed the tournament co-hosts a place in the newly expanded Round of 32.
Mexico opened the tournament with a 2-0 victory over South Africa before adding Thursday’s win over South Korea. The two victories have assured Mexico of finishing atop Group A and advancing to the knockout stage.
While the result on the field was significant, the celebrations extended far beyond Guadalajara. Throughout Michigan, Mexican soccer supporters gathered at watch parties in Lansing, Detroit, Grand Rapids, and other communities to cheer on El Tri.
Fans packed Pablo’s Mexican Restaurant in Lansing, where supporters filled the dining room wearing green jerseys and waving Mexican flags. In Detroit’s Mexicantown, crowds gathered at Tulum Detroit and Taqueria El Rey along Bagley Street, while Candela Detroit opened its doors early for an evening of food, drinks, and World Cup excitement.
On the west side of the state, City Built Brewing in Grand Rapids hosted soccer fans who watched every minute of the match while enjoying food, craft beverages, and community celebrations. The event continued the momentum created by last week’s official Mexico watch party at Studio Park in Grand Rapids, where hundreds gathered for Mexico’s opening match.
Earlier in the tournament, supporters also gathered at Fiesta Charra in East Lansing to watch Mexico defeat South Africa, turning the restaurant into a sea of green, white, and red.
