COMSTOCK PARK, MI (6-19-26) — On a night when dogs filled the stands at LMCU Ballpark for Bark in the Park, Garrett Pennington (#33) provided the biggest highlight of the evening, launching a sixth-inning three-run home run to lift the West Michigan Whitecaps to a 3-2 victory over the Lansing Lugnuts.
The Whitecaps entered the bottom of the sixth trailing 2-0 and struggling to generate offense against Lansing starter Samuel Dutton (#17). After Bryce Rainer (#2) singled and Caleb Shpur (#23) reached base, Pennington stepped to the plate with one out and delivered the game’s defining moment.
Pennington turned on an inside pitch from Dutton and drove it over the left-center field wall for his 13th home run of the season. The blast scored Shpur and Rainer and gave West Michigan its first lead of the game at 3-2.
The home run accounted for all three Whitecaps runs and increased Pennington’s RBI total to 50 on the season.
Lansing grabbed the early advantage in the third inning. Gunner Gouldsmith (#8) drove in the game’s first run before Jared Sprague-Lott (#22) added an RBI single later in the inning, giving the Lugnuts a 2-0 lead.
West Michigan starter Carlos Marcano (#16) kept the Whitecaps within striking distance despite the early deficit. Marcano worked 4.2 innings, allowing two runs on six hits while striking out six batters.
Juanmi Vasquez (#17) recorded the final out of the fifth inning before Preston Howey (#15) took over and shut down the Lansing offense. Howey tossed three scoreless innings, allowing just one hit to earn his first victory of the season.
Closer Inohan Paniagua (#21) worked a perfect ninth inning and struck out one batter to record his second save of the year.
Offensively, Rainer led the Whitecaps with two hits and a run scored, while Shpur added a hit and a walk. Pennington finished 1-for-4 with three RBIs and one run scored.
Dutton took the loss despite an otherwise solid outing. The Lansing right-hander allowed three runs on five hits over six innings, with Pennington’s home run proving to be the difference.
Both teams finished with six hits and one error, but the Whitecaps capitalized on their biggest opportunity of the night while the bullpen combination of Howey and Paniagua held Lansing scoreless over the final four innings.
The victory improved West Michigan to 25-40 on the season, while Lansing fell to 29-36.
