DETROIT, MI (6-23-26) — Ben Malgeri’s (#53) long-awaited Major League debut provided an early spark for the Detroit Tigers, but Jazz Chisholm Jr. (#13) delivered the decisive blow as the New York Yankees rallied for a 4-3 victory Tuesday night before 27,157 fans at Comerica Park.
Making his first appearance in the Major Leagues, Malgeri wasted little time making an impact. The Tigers rookie collected two hits, scored a run, and helped Detroit build an early 2-0 lead against Yankees starter Carlos Rodón (#55).
In the third inning, Malgeri reached base and advanced to second on a wild pitch by Rodón. Zack McKinstry (#39) came around to score on the same play before Dillon Dingler (#13) lined an RBI single to left field, bringing home Malgeri for Detroit’s second run.
The Yankees chipped away in the fourth when José Caballero (#72) grounded out to score Chisholm and cut the deficit to 2-1.
New York seized control in the sixth. With Paul Goldschmidt (#48) aboard, Chisholm crushed a 403-foot home run to right-center field off Casey Mize (#12), giving the Yankees a 3-2 lead. Austin Wells (#28) later doubled home Caballero to extend the advantage to 4-2.
Detroit answered in the bottom half of the inning when Dingler doubled and scored on Max Vierling’s (#8) RBI double, pulling the Tigers within one run at 4-3.
Despite strong relief work from Tyler Holton (#87), Kyle Finnegan (#67), and Enmanuel De Jesús (#37), Detroit was unable to complete the comeback.
Dingler led the Tigers offensively, finishing 3-for-4 with a double, RBI, and run scored. Malgeri’s two-hit performance highlighted a memorable Major League debut, while Vierling added an RBI double and Hao-Yu Lee (#50) contributed a hit.
Rodón (4-2) earned the win for New York, while David Bednar (#53) recorded his 15th save. Mize (2-5) took the loss despite striking out six over 5.2 innings.
For Detroit, the night belonged to Malgeri’s arrival in the Major Leagues. While the Tigers came up one run short, the rookie outfielder’s two-hit debut provided a bright spot in an otherwise disappointing 4-3 loss.
