FLINT, MI – For four Mondays this summer, children from Flint’s east side are discovering that summer camp can be about much more than games. At St. Mary Mission Youth Camp, youngsters are building friendships, strengthening their faith, and creating lasting memories through the church’s annual Summer Youth Camp.

Held on June 29 and July 6, 13, and 20, the free day camp welcomes neighborhood children ages 4 to 13 for a full day of Christ-centered activities from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., including lunch.

Throughout the day, campers are divided into color-coded teams as volunteer counselors guide them through outdoor games, crafts, Bible lessons, music, team-building exercises, and recreational activities. Friendly competitions such as tug-of-war, relay races, bubbles, and group challenges keep children engaged while reinforcing lessons about teamwork, compassion, and respect.

Inside the church, campers participate in interactive faith presentations that bring Scripture to life through storytelling and dramatic performances, helping children connect biblical teachings with everyday life. Meanwhile, classrooms and fellowship areas are transformed into spaces for learning, creativity, and reflection.

Outside, the church grounds become a lively gathering place where children laugh, play, and build new friendships under the guidance of dozens of teen and adult volunteers. Each camper receives a commemorative camp T-shirt, adding to the sense of belonging that has become a tradition for the annual program.

The camp is organized by Sr. Rachel at St. Mary’s and relies on parish volunteers and community members who dedicate their time to creating a safe, welcoming environment for Flint’s youth. Beyond providing meals and activities, organizers say the goal is to help children experience God’s love while developing confidence, leadership skills, and meaningful relationships.

For many neighborhood families, the annual camp has become a summer tradition, offering children a positive place to learn, play, and grow during the month of July.
