DETROIT — There was plenty for Detroit Tigers fans — and their four-legged companions — to celebrate Tuesday night at Comerica Park.
Rookie Max Clark (#15) blasted his first home run at Comerica Park, the Tigers snapped a six-game losing streak with a 4-1 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays, and dogs throughout the ballpark joined their owners for the Tigers’ popular Bark in the Park night.
Clark’s 378-foot, two-run shot in the fifth inning was the second home run of his Major League career, but his first at home in Detroit. His first career homer came on the road Aug. 1, 24 days before he finally got to experience a home-run celebration with the Comerica Park crowd. citeturn0search6
Clark Gives the Home Crowd Something to Celebrate
Tampa Bay took a 1-0 lead in the fourth when Jonny DeLuca’s infield single scored Junior Caminero.
Detroit answered in the fifth.
With Javier Báez (#28) aboard and one out, Clark connected against Rays left-hander Ian Seymour and sent the ball 378 feet into the right-center-field seats.
The two-run blast immediately turned Detroit’s 1-0 deficit into a 2-1 lead.
Detroit wasn’t finished.
Gleyber Torres (#25) scored later in the fifth when Tampa Bay first baseman Jonathan Aranda committed a fielding error on a ball hit by Kevin McGonigle (#7).
Báez helped manufacture another run in the seventh, tripling before Hao-Yu Lee (#50) singled to left to bring him home and extend Detroit’s advantage to 4-1.
Báez finished with two runs scored, while Spencer Torkelson (#20) went 2-for-3 and collected his 23rd double of the season.
The Tigers finished with eight hits and played error-free defense.
Jobe and Bullpen Shut Down Rays
Jackson Jobe (#21) kept Detroit in position to rally.
Jobe worked 4⅓ innings, allowing one run on four hits and three walks while striking out four. He threw 86 pitches, 49 for strikes.
Once Detroit grabbed the lead, the bullpen made sure it stayed there.
Drew Sommers (#51) retired all five hitters he faced over 1⅔ scoreless innings, striking out one and earning the victory.
Jacob Waguespack (#58) followed with a scoreless seventh, Tyler Holton (#87) worked the eighth and Kenley Jansen (#74) retired Tampa Bay in order in the ninth for his 17th save.
Detroit’s pitchers combined to hold Tampa Bay to just one run on five hits while striking out seven.
Bark in the Park Brings Four-Legged Fans to Comerica
Tuesday’s game also offered a different atmosphere in the stands as the Tigers hosted Bark in the Park, giving fans an opportunity to enjoy a night of Major League Baseball alongside their dogs.
The special ticket package includes a game ticket, access to the Bark in the Park experience and a donation to Michigan Humane. The designated party area also provides amenities for the dogs, including water stations and dog relief areas.
August 25 was the third Bark in the Park date of the season, following events April 21 and May 5.
Dog-loving Tigers fans will have two more opportunities to bring their four-legged friends to Comerica Park this season:
September 8 — Tigers vs. Minnesota Twins
September 21 — Tigers vs. Washington Nationals
Special Bark in the Park tickets are required, with separate tickets needed for the fan and dog. The Tigers also require participating dogs to have identification and current vaccination documentation.

Tigers Stay in the Wild Card Hunt
Beyond Clark’s milestone and the festive atmosphere around the ballpark, Tuesday’s victory was important for a Detroit club still trying to play meaningful baseball in September.
The Tigers improved to 62-70 and snapped a six-game losing streak.
Detroit remains 4½ games behind Cleveland for the third and final American League Wild Card position following Tuesday’s action.
There is little room for another prolonged skid, but Tuesday provided plenty of positives.
Jobe kept Detroit in the game. The bullpen delivered 4⅔ scoreless innings. The defense didn’t commit an error. Báez created scoring opportunities. And one of the youngest players on the roster supplied the swing that changed the night.
Clark’s first Major League homer came away from Detroit.
Home run No. 2 came home.
And on a night when Comerica Park welcomed plenty of four-legged Tigers fans, Clark gave everyone something to bark about.
