ANN ARBOR, MI (9-12-26) — Michigan delivered its first statement victory of the Kyle Whittingham era Saturday, knocking off No. 11 Oklahoma, 17-10, before a Maize Out crowd at Michigan Stadium.

The Wolverines improved to 2-0 and looked considerably sharper than they did in their narrow season-opening victory over Western Michigan. This time, Michigan combined an explosive touchdown run from quarterback Bryce Underwood (#19) with a defense that produced the biggest play of the afternoon when the game was on the line.

Underwood gave Michigan its first touchdown late in the opening quarter when he broke loose for a 38-yard touchdown run. The sophomore quarterback found an opening and accelerated into the secondary, bringing the Big House crowd to its feet and giving Michigan a 7-0 advantage.

Kicker Trey Butkowski (#99) added a 40-yard field goal in the second quarter, and Michigan carried a 10-0 advantage into halftime.

Oklahoma, however, did not go quietly.

The Sooners fought their way back into the game in the second half and eventually erased Michigan’s 10-point advantage, tying the score at 10 in the fourth quarter.

That set the stage for the defensive play that changed the game.

Michigan cornerback Jyaire Hill (#0) intercepted Oklahoma quarterback John Mateer (#10) during the fourth quarter, giving the Wolverines the football deep in Sooners territory.

Michigan capitalized.

Running back Jordan Marshall (#23) powered into the end zone from one yard out for the go-ahead touchdown, putting the Wolverines back in front, 17-10.

From there, Michigan’s defense finished the job.

The Wolverines limited Oklahoma to 289 total yards and held the Sooners to just 3-of-13 on third-down opportunities. Mateer finished 17-of-33 passing for 189 yards with one touchdown and the costly interception.

Michigan’s defensive front repeatedly pressured Mateer and closed the afternoon with a sack on Oklahoma’s final play.

Underwood provided much of Michigan’s offensive spark. Although he completed 9-of-17 passes for 111 yards, his ability to make plays with his legs gave Oklahoma problems throughout the afternoon. He finished as Michigan’s leading rusher and produced the Wolverines’ longest and most memorable offensive play with his first-quarter touchdown.

The victory was particularly significant after Michigan escaped its opener against Western Michigan, 13-12. Against a nationally ranked opponent Saturday, the Wolverines showed a much different level of physicality and defensive execution.

There were still areas that will need attention. Michigan was penalized 11 times for 90 yards, and the traditional running game struggled to consistently move Oklahoma’s defensive front.

But when Michigan needed a play, the Wolverines made one.

Hill’s interception and Marshall’s touchdown provided the difference.

Latino Champions Return to the Big House

Saturday also provided a special connection to Michigan’s Latino athletic history.

Among the familiar Michigan champions spotted in attendance were Yaxel Lendeborg and Aday Mara, members of the Wolverines’ 2026 NCAA men’s basketball national championship team.

Lendeborg, a Dominican-American who was born in Puerto Rico to Dominican parents, helped Michigan capture its second men’s basketball national championship last spring.

Mara, a native of Zaragoza, Spain, made history as the first Spanish player to win an NCAA Division I men’s basketball national championship. The 7-foot-3 center was also named the 2026 Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year and earned NCAA All-Tournament honors during Michigan’s championship run.

Also recognized Saturday was Michigan softball legend Sierra Romero, who was inducted into the University of Michigan Hall of Honor Friday night and honored during Saturday’s football game.

Romero remains one of the most decorated players in Michigan softball history. The four-time NFCA All-American was the 2016 USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year and completed her Michigan career with NCAA records for career runs and grand slams.

Their presence added another championship element to an afternoon when Michigan football produced a memorable victory of its own.

Michigan remains home next Saturday, Sept. 19, when the Wolverines host UTEP at Michigan Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
