DETROIT, MI (10-16-26) โ U.S. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), widely known as AOC, brought her national political profile to Southwest Detroit on Friday evening, headlining a Latinos for Abdul rally at Western International High School in support of Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed.
The gathering brought together Latino elected officials from across Michigan, community leaders, students and campaign supporters, highlighting the growing visibility of Latino political leadership and its involvement in the 2026 election.
Before the evening’s rally, a smaller group of elected officials, community leaders and Western International High School students had an opportunity to meet with Ocasio-Cortez. The gathering provided an opportunity for local and statewide leaders to connect with the New York congresswoman and discuss the importance of representation, public service and civic participation.
For Michigan’s Latino elected officials, the event offered an opportunity to demonstrate their support for El-Sayed while emphasizing the importance of engaging Latino communities throughout the state. Their presence also reflected the coalition’s efforts to bring together leaders representing different regions of Michigan around a common political campaign.
The choice of Western International High School as the rally location carried particular significance. Situated in the heart of Southwest Detroit, the school serves a community with deep Mexican-American and Latino roots. The surrounding neighborhoods have long been home to generations of families, businesses, cultural institutions and community organizations that have helped shape Detroit’s history.
Ocasio-Cortez, one of the nation’s most recognizable Latina elected officials, has become a prominent voice on economic inequality, healthcare, immigration and political representation. During her Michigan appearances, she has emphasized the importance of addressing rising living costs and increasing political participation.
The Detroit rally was part of a broader series of campaign appearances across Michigan as El-Sayed and his supporters work to build momentum ahead of the November 3 general election.
El-Sayed’s campaign has centered on three major priorities: getting money out of politics, putting money back into the pockets of working families and establishing Medicare for All. The campaign has also focused on housing affordability, education, economic opportunity and an immigration system that treats people with dignity.
The Latinos for Abdul coalition has been organizing activities across Michigan, including community gatherings, volunteer recruitment, voter outreach and regional rallies. Its efforts have included engagement in Detroit, Lansing, Grand Rapids and other communities with significant Latino populations.
The Southwest Detroit gathering also highlighted the role younger generations can play in civic engagement. The participation of high school students in the pre-rally gathering offered an opportunity to interact with elected officials and observe the political process beyond the classroom.
With Election Day approaching, the involvement of Latino elected officials and community organizations illustrates the attention campaigns are placing on outreach to Michigan’s diverse communities.
El-Sayed faces Republican Mike Rogers in the November 3 general election for Michigan’s U.S. Senate seat.
For Latinos for Abdul, the rally at Western International High School represented another stop in its statewide organizing efforts, bringing together elected officials, community members and young people in one of Michigan’s most historically significant Latino neighborhoods.
