EAST LANSING, MI (1-25-26) โ€” In front of a near-capacity crowd of 9,887 at Breslin Center, No. 21 Michigan State Spartans came up just short in a marquee matchup, falling 197.425โ€“196.900 to No. 5 UCLA Bruins. The meet lived up to its billing, remaining undecided until the final rotation.

UCLA was led by Olympic standout Jordan Chiles, who turned in one of the nightโ€™s defining moments with a perfect 10.000 on the floor exercise. Chiles also captured the all-around title with a meet-best 39.875, adding top scores on vault (9.975), uneven bars (9.950), and balance beam (9.950).

Michigan State matched UCLA rotation for rotation and showed impressive depth across all four events. The Spartans opened strong on vault, posting a 49.300 to keep pace early. Sage Kellerman (9.925) and Cady Duplissis (9.900) anchored the lineup, while Olivia Zsarmani followed closely with a 9.875.

UCLA created separation on the uneven bars with a 49.350, highlighted again by Chilesโ€™ 9.950, but Michigan State responded on balance beam with a steady 49.275. Nikki Smith delivered one of the Spartansโ€™ top routines of the night with a 9.925 on beam, while Lilia Cosman added a 9.900 to keep the margin razor thin.

Heading into the final rotation, the meet remained well within reach. Michigan State closed with a 49.350 on floor, led by MaKayla Tucker and Smith, who each scored 9.925. Stephanie Lebster added a 9.875, helping push the Spartans to their season-high total. UCLA, however, answered with a 49.450 on floor, punctuated by Chilesโ€™ perfect score, sealing the narrow road victory.

In the all-around standings, Smith finished second overall with a 39.400, underscoring Michigan Stateโ€™s balanced performance against one of the nationโ€™s elite programs. Despite the loss, the Spartansโ€™ total of 196.900 stands as one of their strongest showings of the season and signals continued momentum as Big Ten competition intensifies.
