DETROIT, MI (4/3/26) — Just hours after the city celebrated Opening Day as una verdadera fiesta del béisbol, the Detroit Tigers delivered on the field, riding the arm of Framber Valdez (#59) to a 4-0 shutout victory over the St. Louis Cardinals at Comerica Park.

From the early morning stops in Southwest Detroit to a packed Comerica Park, the energy never dipped—Detroit showed up, and this time, the Tigers matched it pitch for pitch.

Valdez Delivers in the Spotlight

After being introduced as the Opening Day starter in front of a sellout crowd, Valdez (#59) delivered exactly what the moment demanded—6.0 scoreless innings, allowing just 3 hits while striking out 5.

Working with pace and precision, the left-hander threw 61 strikes on 91 pitches, keeping St. Louis hitters guessing and off balance all afternoon.

“I just focused on attacking the zone and trusting my pitches,” Valdez said postgame.

For a Tigers team looking to respond after a tough series in Arizona, Valdez set the tone—con confianza y control—from the first inning.

Middle-Inning Momentum

Detroit’s offense broke through in the 4th inning, when Dillon Dingler (#13) crushed a 433-foot home run to left-center, scoring Riley Greene (#31) and igniting the crowd.

The Tigers added on in the 5th, as Greene (#31) came through again with an RBI single, bringing home Gleyber Torres (#25) to extend the lead.

Detroit finished with 10 hits and went 4-for-8 with runners in scoring position, a key difference in the game.

  • Greene (#31): 2-for-4, RBI, run
  • Dingler (#13): HR, 2 RBI
  • Javier Báez (#28): 2-for-3, RBI, SB
  • Kerry Carpenter (#30): 2-for-3

Bullpen Locks It Down

Following Valdez, the Tigers bullpen kept things clean:

  • Will Vest (#19)
  • Kyle Finnegan (#67)
  • Tyler Holton (#87)

The trio combined for 3 scoreless innings, helping secure the shutout as Detroit held St. Louis to just 5 hits and 0-for-5 with runners in scoring position.

“We had a good plan coming in, and I tried to stick with it every inning,” Valdez added.

Cultura Meets Competition

What started earlier in the day at places like Evie’s Tamales and El Nacimiento Restaurant carried into the ballpark and translated into performance.

Valdez, representing his Dominican roots with orgullo, didn’t just take the mound—he owned the moment. The Tigers followed his lead, turning Opening Day energy into execution.

“It’s about getting better every time out and helping the team win,” he said.

A Complete Opening Day

As fans filtered back through Mexicantown—toward Armando’s Mexican Restaurant, Mi Pueblo, and beyond—the celebration continued, now with a Tigers win in hand.

Opening Day in Detroit once again proved it’s more than baseball—it’s tradition, community, and culture.

And on this day, the Tigers made sure the result matched the atmosphere—una victoria completa.
