DETROIT, MI (4-23-26) — Following a heartfelt conversation with La Prensa Latina News Wire, Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlán guitarist and vocalist Jonathan Palomar made one thing clear: when the world-famous ensemble arrives at the Detroit Opera House on May 9, audiences can expect far more than a concert.

They can expect an experience.

“Allow yourselves to live the mariachi… the Mexico sound,” Palomar said. “You don’t need translation. Just by listening to the musical notes, you’re going to feel all the emotion and the message.”

For many in Michigan, the return of Mariachi Vargas is long awaited. Palomar recalled previous visits to Ann Arbor several years ago and said the group is eager to reconnect with Midwest audiences after years of touring more heavily through Texas, California, and the southern United States.

A Legacy of Excellence

Palomar’s place within Mariachi Vargas is rooted in musical bloodlines. His father, Rafael Palomar, performed with the group for more than two decades, while his grandfather, Román Palomar, wrote the celebrated cumbia “El Mariachi Loco.”

Jonathan joined Mariachi Vargas in 2017 and has earned acclaim for his stirring performances, including his interpretation of “Llamarada.”

Tradition Meets New Energy

While Mariachi Vargas remains synonymous with timeless classics such as “Son de la Negra,” Palomar said the 2026 production will also include newer music designed to connect with younger listeners.

“We always try to evolve,” he said. “We bring the songs people love, but we also bring new music for younger ears because we want mariachi music to keep growing.”

That effort is paying off. Palomar noted that mariachi education programs in schools across Texas, Nevada, California, and Colorado are helping create a younger generation of fans.

More Than a Show

Unlike smaller mariachi groups, Mariachi Vargas performs with 14 musicians on stage, creating the full traditional sound through violins, trumpets, guitars, vihuela, guitarrón, and multiple vocalists.

But what separates the ensemble, according to Palomar, is audience chemistry.

“We want them to sing with us, whistle, dance, and be part of the show,” he said. “That interaction is what makes people want to come back.”

Detroit Connection

Palomar also shared admiration for Detroit sports culture, calling himself a fan of the Detroit Lions and remembering Mexican-born former Detroit Tigers standout Aurelio Rodríguez.

Now, with downtown Detroit thriving and the Opera House continuing to host world-class performances, the timing feels right for one of Mexico’s most iconic musical groups to return.
