DETROIT, MI (5-26-26) — The Detroit Tigers appeared poised to continue building momentum Tuesday night at Comerica Park before a disastrous eighth inning unraveled a competitive game, as the Los Angeles Angels erupted for five runs on their way to a 10-6 victory over Detroit.
Despite the loss, there were bright spots for the Tigers, particularly from rookie infielder Kevin McGonigle (#7), who continued his impressive season at the plate. McGonigle finished 3-for-4 with a triple and two RBI, helping Detroit stay within striking distance through the middle innings.
The Tigers offense showed patience early, drawing six walks and capitalizing on timely hitting. Colt Keith (#33) sparked the offense with a pair of hits, including a triple, while Wenceel Pérez (#46) launched a solo home run in the sixth inning to tie the game at 6-6 and energize the Comerica Park crowd.
Detroit battled back repeatedly after falling behind 2-0 in the third inning. Javier Báez’s absence from the lineup was noticeable defensively and offensively, but the Tigers still managed to pressure the Angels pitching staff throughout much of the evening.
After Kerry Carpenter was unavailable, Jahmai Jones (#18) delivered a pinch-hit RBI single, while Zach McKinstry (#39) contributed two RBI despite going hitless. Matt Vierling (#8) also added a hit and scored a run as Detroit collected eight hits overall.
Starting pitcher Keider Montero (#54) kept Detroit within reach for most of the night, allowing four earned runs over 5.2 innings while striking out seven. Brenan Hanifee (#75) provided solid relief work before the game slipped away late.
The turning point came in the eighth inning when reliever Will Vest (#19) struggled to contain the Angels lineup. Los Angeles took advantage with clutch two-out hitting, highlighted by Vaughn Grissom’s grand slam that broke open the tie game and silenced the home crowd. Grissom finished with six RBI on the night.
The Tigers struck out 12 times offensively, including four from Spencer Torkelson (#20), and stranded eight runners on base. Detroit also went just 2-for-9 with runners in scoring position, missing several opportunities to seize control earlier in the game.
While the loss was frustrating, the Tigers showed flashes offensively and continued receiving production from younger players like McGonigle and Pérez. Detroit will now look to bounce back tomorrow and avoid letting the series slip away at home.
