DETROIT (July 7, 2026) — Behind another dominant outing from left-hander Tarik Skubal and a six-run offensive performance, the Detroit Tigers defeated the visiting Athletics 6-2 Tuesday night at Comerica Park, continuing their strong play in front of the home crowd.

Skubal (#29) earned his fifth victory of the season, improving to 5-4, after allowing just one earned run on five hits over five innings. The Tigers’ ace struck out nine Athletics hitters while walking two, throwing 96 pitches, 62 for strikes, and finishing with a game score of 60.

The only blemish against Skubal came in the third inning when Athletics center fielder Henry Bolte (#33) connected for a solo home run to left field. Otherwise, the reigning Cy Young Award winner kept Oakland’s lineup off balance, generating 22 swinging strikes as part of a 12-strikeout performance by Detroit’s pitching staff.

Athletics starter J.T. Ginn (#35) was charged with the loss, falling to 7-5 after surrendering two runs on two hits across four innings. Ginn struck out four and walked two before turning the game over to the bullpen.

Detroit wasted little time getting on the scoreboard.

In the bottom of the first inning, Colt Keith (#33) launched a two-run home run to right-center field, scoring Kevin McGonigle (#7) and giving the Tigers an early 2-0 advantage.

The Athletics cut the deficit in half during the third on Bolte’s solo blast, but Detroit answered with its biggest offensive inning of the night in the sixth.

Following singles by Zach McKinstry (#39) and Spencer Torkelson (#20), rookie Ben Malgeri (#53) lined an RBI double to right field, scoring McKinstry while moving Torkelson to third. Moments later, Matt Vierling (#8) ripped a two-run double to right, plating both runners and extending the lead to 5-1.

McGonigle capped the inning with an RBI single to center, scoring Vierling for Detroit’s sixth and final run.

Vierling finished the night with two RBIs, while Keith, McGonigle, and Malgeri each drove in runs as the Tigers totaled eight hits and went 3-for-10 with runners in scoring position.

McGonigle collected two hits and scored once, while McKinstry also recorded a pair of hits to pace Detroit’s offense.

The Athletics threatened briefly in the seventh inning when Shea Langeliers (#23) delivered an RBI single that scored Bolte, trimming the lead to 6-2. However, Detroit’s bullpen shut the door the rest of the way.

Kyle Finnegan (#67) worked a scoreless sixth inning to earn his 10th hold of the season before Drew Anderson (#38) and Jacob Waguespack (#58) combined to retire the final eight Athletics hitters. Waguespack tossed two perfect innings to close out the victory.

Oakland managed seven hits but stranded nine runners and finished just 1-for-6 with runners in scoring position.

Detroit struck out 11 times offensively but made the most of its opportunities, capitalizing on timely extra-base hits during the decisive sixth inning.
