GRAND RAPIDS, MI — A historic milestone is unfolding in Grand Rapids as three of the city’s most influential public institutions are now led by Latino leaders, marking a powerful moment of representation, perseverance, and progress for the region.

For the first time, the Grand Rapids City Commission, Grand Rapids Public Schools, and Grand Rapids Community College are each chaired by Latinos—leaders whose paths reflect years of community advocacy, civic engagement, and a shared belief in the enduring spirit of Sí Se Puede.

At the city level, Milinda Ysasi now serves as President of the Grand Rapids City Commission, helping guide policy decisions that shape Michigan’s second-largest city. Ysasi’s leadership signals a growing inclusivity within municipal government and reflects the evolving demographics and voices of Grand Rapids.

In education, José Rodríguez was selected as Board President of Grand Rapids Public Schools. His role places him at the forefront of decisions impacting thousands of students and families, with a focus on equity, opportunity, and academic success.

At the postsecondary level, Salvador López now serves as Chairman of the GRCC Board of Trustees, overseeing governance at Grand Rapids Community College, one of the region’s most vital access points to higher education and workforce development.

Together, these appointments represent more than individual achievements. They reflect decades of groundwork laid by community members who organized, voted, mentored, and persisted—often without seeing immediate results. For many, this moment validates that commitment and opens doors for the next generation of civic and educational leaders.

Community leaders say the significance extends beyond symbolism. Latino leadership across multiple institutions strengthens trust, broadens perspectives in decision-making, and ensures policies better reflect the lived experiences of Grand Rapids’ diverse residents.

As the city looks ahead, optimism is high. With Latino leaders shaping policy, education, and opportunity at every level, many believe this is only the beginning.

Join me in congratulating:
Salvador López, Chairman, GRCC Board of Trustees
José Rodríguez, Board President, Grand Rapids Public Schools
Milinda Ysasi, President, City of Grand Rapids Commission

¡Adelante, Grand Rapids!
