Central Michigan Chippewas Regain Control in Third, Defeat Akron Zips 86–79

MOUNT PLEASANT, MI (2-11-26) — Central Michigan Chippewas regained control with a decisive third quarter and held off Akron Zips 86–79 in MAC action.

MOUNT PLEASANT, MI (2-11-26). — Central Michigan led most of the night, weathered a brief third-quarter swing, and then reasserted control with a game-defining run to defeat Akron 86–79 in Mid-American Conference action.

CMU opened with a 20–18 first-quarter lead and took a 35–32 advantage into halftime. The Chippewas got an early spark late in the first when Jayda Mosley (#30) knocked down a 24-foot three with 0:37 left (assist: Madi Morson (#0)), and Morson followed with a pull-up jumper at the horn to keep momentum on Central Michigan’s side.

Akron’s best stretch came out of the locker room. The Zips briefly grabbed their first lead of the night early in the third quarter, fueled by Monique Mitchell (#35) and Corinne Reed (#10). Central Michigan answered immediately. Morson tied it with a 24-foot three (assist: Rylan Buschell (#10), and the Chippewas turned the tide with a surge that included finishes from Demetria Prewitt (#23) (assist: Morson), Morson’s attack off the bounce, and a late Lilah Turnbull (#2) 24-foot three (assist: Morson) as CMU won the third 30–21 to build a 65–53 cushion.

Akron kept coming in the fourth, cutting into the margin behind Shaena Brew (#8) and Mitchell, but Central Michigan’s composure at the free-throw line and timely buckets prevented the Zips from fully closing the gap. CMU went 31-of-43 at the stripe and held off Akron’s 26-point final quarter to secure the 86–79 win.

Morson led all scorers with 29 points, adding four assists and four steals. Ayanna-Sarai Darrington (#25) powered CMU inside with 25 points and seven rebounds, consistently getting to the line. Turnbull finished with nine points, six rebounds and four assists, while Prewitt added seven points, including a layup at the end of the second quarter off a Morson assist.

For Akron, Brew scored 26 points with four assists, Mitchell added 23 points (3-for-6 from three), and Reed finished with 15.
