DETROIT, MI (4-22-26) — The Detroit Tigers showed fight until the final out Wednesday night, trimming a large deficit with a spirited ninth-inning push, but a seven-run eighth by the Milwaukee Brewers proved too much to overcome in a 12-4 setback at Comerica Park.
For much of the night, Detroit remained within striking distance thanks to another steady outing from right-hander Keider Montero (#54), who battled through 5.2 innings while allowing three earned runs and keeping the Tigers close early.
Milwaukee jumped ahead with three runs in the second inning, but Detroit answered in the fourth when rookie infielder Kevin McGonigle (#7) continued his strong start with an RBI double to get the Tigers on the board.
Detroit had multiple chances throughout the game, collecting nine hits and five walks, but left 10 runners on base. Still, the Tigers never quit.
Veteran outfielder Matt Vierling (#8) delivered one of the biggest swings for Detroit, driving in two runs with a clutch double. McGonigle finished with two hits and an RBI, while Riley Greene (#31), Spencer Torkelson (#20) and Gleyber Torres (#25) also contributed hits.
The game turned in the eighth when Milwaukee broke it open with seven runs, but Detroit responded with three runs in the ninth to show resilience and avoid going quietly.
Even in defeat, the Tigers displayed the competitive edge that has defined much of their season—continuing to battle late, putting pressure on opposing bullpens, and showing flashes of offensive depth.
Detroit will look to regroup in the next game of the series and get back to its winning brand of baseball. With young contributors like McGonigle producing and veterans continuing to grind, the Tigers remain dangerous every night.
