DETROIT, MI (5-4-26) — It had the makings of a steal for the Detroit Tigers — until one inning changed everything.
Boston’s Payton Tolle (#70) dominated from the jump, carrying a no-hitter into the seventh while striking out 8 over 7.0 innings of one-hit, zero-earned-run baseball. Yet despite being overmatched at the plate, Detroit scratched across two runs in the sixth — without the benefit of a hit — taking advantage of defensive miscues to grab a 2-0 lead.
Through six innings, it was classic Tigers baseball: gritty, opportunistic, and just enough to stay ahead.
Then came the seventh.
With weather rolling in, Boston erupted for five runs, turning the game on its head. The rally was powered by Jarren Duran (#16), who launched a three-run home run and finished with three RBIs, igniting the Red Sox comeback.
Right-hander Rony Vanasco (#70) was tagged with the loss after allowing four earned runs in just 0.2 innings, as Detroit’s bullpen couldn’t hold the lead.
The Tigers showed life in the eighth, cutting into the deficit with a two-RBI double from Dillon Dingler (#13) and an RBI from Matt Vierling (#8), but the comeback fell short.
Boston reliever Garrett Whitlock (#22) helped bridge the late innings before Aroldis Chapman (#44) shut the door for his seventh save.
Detroit managed just three hits on the night and went 1-for-8 with runners in scoring position, unable to fully recover after the decisive seventh inning.
The two teams will turn the page quickly, as a pair of left-handers take the mound in the next matchup — Detroit’s Framber Valdez set to face Boston’s Jovani Moran.
